Which Type of Walnut Flooring is Better for Your Home?
Posing no problems in installation and with a unique appearance, walnut flooring is popular for many homes. Typically, this hardwood is characterized by dark brown to purplish-black heartwood and white or tan sapwood. Higher grades, on the other hand, are more uniform, as the result of steaming the lumber to bleed the dark shade of the heartwood into the sapwood. In additionally, walnut flooring, with a Janka scale rating of 1010, is moderately dense and durable and has straight and open grain. If you are considering walnut flooring for your home, what are the options?
First, think about grading. Because steaming the lumber is used to even out the appearance, higher grades, such as Clear and Select, provide more color uniformity. Some, however, specifically choose walnut for the color disparity. If you fall into this group, consider going with a lower grade that has more sapwood, such as #1 or #2 common. For the greatest distinction between the heartwood and sapwood, consider seeking our #3 common, or character grade, walnut flooring.
Aside from the grade, consider the type of walnut hardwood flooring – prefinished or unfinished, solid or engineered – that is best for your home and that you want to install. While walnut is excellent for machining and sanding and poses no finishing problems, purchasing a prefinished product eliminates these steps altogether, and installation overall ends up taking less time. Nevertheless, prefinished walnut flooring, like all other such hardwoods, comes in a limited selection of stains, based on the manufacturer. Unfinished walnut, however, allows you to find the exact finish, as you can test different stains on the newly-sanded surface.
Once you've figured out whether unfinished or prefinished walnut fits your needs better, determine whether engineered or solid hardwood is better for homes. In many cases, this is not a choice. Solid hardwoods should be installed on a wood subfloor and must be added on or above grade; otherwise, solid walnut flooring exposed to moisture or heat will warp. Engineered walnut, on the other hand, can be installed below grade, as well as on or above, and can be placed on top of radiant heat and concrete.
